Healthcare is at the top of many people’s agendas when making the big move to Spain. So don’t forget to get your medical care sorted from the start; that way, you can enjoy all the fun, safe in the knowledge that should something happen, help is at hand.
State hospitals and health centres in Marbella
High quality state health care is available if you are either in the Spanish national health system or a European national with the relevant EHIC card. You will need to show your card at the health centre or hospital; if not, they may charge you for the treatment.
The Costa del Sol hospital at Los Monteros to the east of Marbella is a vast, modern, state-of-the-art facility and one of the best-equipped hospitals in Spain. As the hospital treats approximately 15% foreign visitors, there is a voluntary interpreting service to help should you have language difficulties.
Health centres (Ambulatorios, Centros de Salud) are the Spanish equivalent of general clinics where you can go for minor injuries not requiring A&E attention. The Junta de Andalucía website lists all the Centros de Salud in Marbella and the surrounding areas and gives information on how to make appointments.
Private health care
Marbella is not short of private doctors and health clinics, largely because many residents and visitors opt for ease and convenience as opposed to the less flexible state health facilities.
There are also several excellent private hospitals in and around Marbella, including:
Quironsalud Marbella is on the edge of Marbella town and part of a large private health group with over twenty hospitals in addition to health centres throughout Spain. This large hospital has six floors with top doctors and constant investment in equipment, keeping it at the forefront of medical expertise.
Hospital Ceram is a high-tech hospital that started life as a fertility clinic for international clients looking for the highest standards of care and accommodation. Women’s health is still a priority and, as home births are still illegal in Spain, Ceram aims to make the birth experience as comfortable as possible with two of the four suites in the hospital being birthing rooms with water-birth pools.
HC Marbella is a modern hospital with over thirty specialities where research and innovation are priorities. Doctors at HC Marbella are regularly involved in research with obvious direct benefits to their patients.
