Estepona has been through some admirable changes this year, and as the city of flowers focuses on a progressive and sustainable path forward, we’re excited to share with you some of the most exciting updates from the area!
Estepona named 2nd Best City in Europe
Finishing in second place, just behind Amersfoort in The Netherlands, Estepona glistened with pride following the news in November. It’s clear that Estepona’s progressive policy on sustainability has made a name for itself across Europe.
The esteemed organisation, ‘The Academy of Urbanism,’ highlights the city’s boldness and determination in embracing a commitment to enhancing the quality of life through the ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’ project. Estepona’s Mayor, José María García Urbano, expressed immense satisfaction that such a prestigious international body as ‘The Academy of Urbanism’ has directed its attention towards Estepona.
The Academy of Urbanism acknowledges the significant strides Estepona has made in sustainability and transformation, regarding the municipality as a European example of a modern, sustainable, and environmentally conscious city that prioritises high-quality living.
Estepona Mentioned in British Press
In addition to the coveted second-best city in Europe award, Estepona has also been gaining recognition in the British press. Deservingly named ‘The Garden of the Costa del Sol’, Estepona was recently mentioned in an article from The Express as ‘the most beautiful city in Spain, where Spaniards go on holiday’.
Unlike other resorts on the Costa del Sol, Estepona has a less concentrated centre of tourism, making it an ideal location for those who want to soak up the Spanish sun without the crowds. In addition to this, thanks to the town’s ability to keep its traditional charm, it’s also a great place to experience authentic Spanish culture.
La Hermandad Park – a captivating new green area in Estepona
Estepona has recently unveiled a new 16,500 square-metre green space in the Las Mesas area. This new green area finds its place in one of the city’s expanding zones within the urban core, situated north of the Estepona Port, between Letonia and Tres Banderas streets.
This new ‘green lung’ consists of green spaces and landscaped areas, featuring squares, seating areas, playgrounds, and an artificial lake. Additionally, an assortment of different plants has been planted across approximately 3,700 square meters, enriching the lakeside and sloped areas with floral diversity. Forest zones have been designed on the steep eastern and south-eastern slopes, featuring Mediterranean trees to enhance ground coverage, and prevent soil erosion.
Could Spain remove the 90-day limit for British second homeowners?
Spain is eagerly observing France’s latest steps to allow British second homeowners in France the right to a long-stay visa. The amendment, seen as a response to those ‘punished by Brexit’, aims to allow second homeowners in France the automatic right to a long-stay visa, bypassing the current 90-day cap. Spain, with a significantly larger population of British second homeowners compared to France’s 60,000, looks like it could be set to follow suit.
Spain’s acting Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, stated that he had held meetings at the Foreign Office in which they discussed the issues surrounding British tourists in Spain, specifically the 90-day cap. Speaking of the plans, Gómez said that it is “in our interest to lobby for and convince the EU that we can try to work an exception with them.”
