Guadalmina Golf Course

The Real Club de Golf Guadalmina is one of the more popular golf clubs and courses in Marbella. Not only does it offer a spectacular course, it also has one of the best clubhouses.

Guadalmina dates back to 1933 when Norberto Goizueta spied the area from his boat. Initially it was all agricultural land, but Goizueta and his family planted it with a new variety of grass and in 1959, the Guadlamina Sur golf course was completed. In 1965 the new club hosted the Spanish Championship and it has continued to be the chosen location for many important tournaments, such as the Spanish PGA.

In 1973, the club opened its second course; Guadalmina North and in 1989, the construction of a par three course was completed. In the 21st century it has gone from strength to strength and boast, more than 2,000 members from some 17 different nationalities.

The Guadalmina golf school has added an extra cachet to this club. Its success is thanks to its team of professional teachers and the school has produced several top-flight golfers, including Azahara Muñoz, Noemí Jiménez Rocío Sánchez Lobato, Esther and Ángel Ibáñez, Laura Cabanillas, Sergio Gutiérrez and Gómez Casto. Other graduates of the school may not be so well known, but there are hundreds of them every year, which is a testament to its popularity and expertise.

In 2008 the King of Spain honoured Guadalmina Golf with a Royal Appointment, which allowed it to be named the ‘Real Club de Golf Guadalmina’. In terms of the golfing, The South course is renowned for its difficulty due to its narrow fairways surrounded by tress that demand a greater number of straight shots. Therefore, this is the preferred one for more experienced players. The North course has more hills and water obstacles and requires straight drives down the middle of the fairways as failure to do so may have one ending up in one of the numerous water hazards hidden in the rough.

Besides these two 18-hole courses, there is a nine-hole, par three Pitch & Putt course and a driving range with 40 bays for grass and 21 bays in a covered area that are perfect for practising chipping and putting. Members can also enjoy use of tennis and padel courts as well as a swimming pool and the club’s cafeteria, which is more like a restaurant and an excellent venue for parties.
