The Marbella real estate market is a rapidly evolving one in which each decade produces its own property hotspots and up-and-coming areas. The latter offer homebuyers great opportunities for a sound investment and the chance to get more home for their money in an upwardly mobile area, so spotting such a zone correctly is one of the keys to successful home buying on the Costa del Sol.
If you picture the New Golden Mile as a formerly deserted area now awash in construction you would be wrong. In real estate, the best location tend to be taken first, and this stretch of shoreline extending between Marbella and Estepona was spotted early on. As a result you will find some of the earlier beachside suburbs flowing westwards from San Pedro Alcántara, as well as those surrounding the bowl-shaped valley that hosts the Gary Player-designed El Paraiso golf course.
Over the decades this has become a mature residential area much loved by successive generations of homeowners and tourists, who appreciate the setting close to Marbella, Puerto Banús, San Pedro Alcántara and Estepona – as well as Benahavis – and the fact that in spite of this convenient location the New Golden Mile retains a low-rise, low-density feel with nature close by. What has happened in recent times is not that this area has been ‘discovered’ as such, but that it is now increasingly in vogue, and also increasingly regarded as an upmarket alternative to other, more densely consolidated parts of Marbella.
With golf courses, schools, shops, dining, spa hotels, beach clubs and a host of other amenities nearby, attention has been shifting increasingly towards this lovely coastal area that links Estepona and Marbella’s western areas, with people keen to buy the attractive new boutique developments of villas and apartments that are being created on spare plots within established areas such as El Paraiso and Costalita. Other areas, such as Selwo Hills, La Alquería and Cancelada, offer the space and scope for developers to create somewhat larger luxury apartment complexes or gated villa communities, as well as for private homeowners to buy land and build their own property.
It is here that much of the focus has been, as not only is there more scope for building contemporary homes, but you still get a lot more home for your money and the area is considered to be an excellent mid-term investment with property values that will eventually come up to par with many of Marbella’s best addresses. Moreover, the older residential areas such as Benamara offer both recently renovated villas in top beachside locations as well as homes with great restoration and investment potential.
