Like many of the key resorts on the Costa del Sol, Sotogrande was ‘born’ in the early 60’s, 1962 to be precise. The initial ideal and concept for this prestigious resort was hatched by philanthropist Joseph Rafael McMicking who sent his cousin out to find a spot close to the sea which could developed into an exclusive resort. It was to be a place where an international crowd could come and enjoy the amazing outdoor life that only this part of the Mediterranean could offer. It is fair to say that in the early days it was an elite crowd that looked to buy property in Sotogrande and enjoy the special facilities that residents were offered.
These days it is still a prestigious part of the coast with an exclusive marina and some of the best property developments you could find in Spain. Bankers, business owners and sports stars often chose Sotogrande as the place to purchase their holiday home, or even set up a more permanent residence. That is still very much the case these days but there are many parts of Sotogrande that are accessible to people of all budgets. With some of Europe’s finest golf courses in Sotogrande like Valderrama, San Roque Golf Resort and La Reserva de Sotogrande, more property was built to overlook these amazing courses.
The marina also gave ample opportunity for new properties to be built to compliment the substantial villas in areas like Kings and Queens and around Sotogrande Costa.
Unlike some of the other resorts on the Costa del Sol, Sotogrande is very much a family destination. It has the highly acclaimed Sotogrande International School where people from all international backgrounds have chosen to send their children for their education.
Even now there are more plans in place to make Sotogrande one of the most desirable places in which to by property. The new ‘lake’ beach club with an inland lagoon is going to be unique and something that residents of Sotogrande will be able to enjoy during the summer months. Even this has a real family feel with special nights and areas for children being included within the project.
Sotogrande is a large area covering the coastal side known as Sotogrande Costa and the upper section called Sotogrande Alto. We have a selection of top quality properties to buy in Sotogrande and you can view some of them by clicking here
