Sitting on top of a cliff 430 metres above sea-level with breath-taking views across the Mediterranean and towards North Africa, the historical white village of Casares is a popular tourist destination. Known for its cobbled plazas, narrow winding roads, steep streets and Moorish style white washed houses precariously perched on the hillside, Casares offers a glimpse of Spain at its most authentic. Overlooked by the ruins of the 13th Century Arab fortress, Casares is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and was designated a Historical-Artistic Complex in 1978.

Not to be mistaken with Casares Costa, the area along the coastal road, Casares village can be found by turning inland from the N340/A7 at Km. 147 (between Estepona and Sabinillas) near Torre de la Sal. Several new developments have sprung up either side of the road that rises up toward the village for about 15km.  As you leave the coast behind the road takes you through some stunningly beautiful countryside and eventually offers up a spectacular and picturesque scenic view of the village.  Driving in the village isn’t easy, so visitors and tourists tend to park and walk.

A group of artisans and crafts people have made the village their home, producing exquisite local handicrafts and artworks including weaving, lacework, jewellery and fine woodcarving. There is a small ex-pat community but if you are planning to make Casares your home then a smattering of the Spanish language would probably come in handy.  It is the perfect place to choose to purchase a property if you enjoy walking as the area around Casares boasts ten official hiking trails. The surrounding hills and valleys are where some of the larger more secluded villas or Fincas can be found.
