If you haven’t visited Estepona recently, you are in for quite a surprise on your next trip. Always a favourite with both expats and locals, this once-sleepy resort town has experienced quite an awakening in recent years. A new mayor has injected vitality into the traditional Spanish community that is now welcoming a wave of interest and investment, creating a new vibrancy that can be felt throughout its beautiful flower-bedecked streets.
Estepona is not only a feast for the eyes, however. Once in the shadow of glamourous neighbours Puerto Banús and Marbella, it is unquestionably taking its place in the sun as a host of innovative eateries attract a gourmet crowd seeking new and original locations.
Innovation meets tradition
The Kempinski Hotel Bahía has recently undergone a redesign that has welcomed three brand new dining concepts to the New Golden Mile. Under the auspices of the luxury hotel brand, El Paseo del Mar offers speciality cocktails, craft beers and light meals at the Black Rose, while Baltazár is a cool poolside restaurant and steakhouse. Spíler provides a chilled-out beach restaurant setting by the sea with classic views over the Mediterranean. It is Estepona’s answer to Puente Romano’s La Plaza on Marbella’s Golden Mile.
Tapas revisited
Traditional Spanish tapas are always a treat and can be found in most local bars to complement an ice-cold caña, or small glass of lager. La Casa del Rey has taken the notion of tapas and added its own interpretation of classic dishes as well as surprising diners with flavoursome innovations. Thus slow-cooked venison with rosemary is offered alongside kebabs of tuna and pineapple, as well as numerous other mouth-watering dishes. For sturdier appetites, main courses are also available.
And opening soon….
Soon to be added to the gastronomic offerings of Estepona is the much-anticipated Gourmet Market, located in the town’s former auction house. Nineteen stalls will offer high quality food, including an oyster bar, two cerveceríasand a cocktail and wine bar. With a large outside terrace and chill-out area, this new addition to the culinary landscape of Estepona will no doubt see an influx of visitors keen to partake of the tempting wares proposed within!
