Nueva Andalucía is famous for its Golf Valley, which comprises the championship courses of Los Naranjos, Las Brisas and Aloha, but did you know that golf in this region actually started in Guadalmina? Indeed, the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina was the first course established in Marbella, and as such has the longest history and proudest tradition of any club on the Costa del Golf, as the Costa del Sol is sometimes known.
What’s more, the origins of the club are not British, but Basque, for the area was first ‘discovered’ by Norberto Goizueta all the way back in 1933 when sailing these shores in his yacht. What he surveyed were sugarcane fields that stretched all the way to the beach, but the Basque entrepreneur had an eye for potential and was quick to realise just what a gem this seaside stretch of land was. Years later he would return as an investor and the founder of Guadalmina as now know it.
Real Club de Golf Guadalmina
The course was first laid in 1959, and six years later it hosted the Spanish Championship; the beginning of a long and illustrious tradition of competition golf played on these parkland fairways. In 1973, a second ‘Guadalmina North’ course was added, and as with the original ‘south’ course, luxurious villas and apartment complexes developed upon its green fringes, overlooking the lofty fairways and bunkers.
The course is the only one in the Marbella area that runs alongside the beach, and with 2,000 members from 17 different countries its stylish clubhouse is a social as well as a sporting hub in the area. The Guadalmina Golf School, moreover, is a reference for the sport on a national level, and in 2008 King Juan Carlos awarded the club by Royal Appointment, from which point onwards it became known as the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina.
