Valderrama Masters Sotogrande

Golfing in Andalucía is getting yet another boost to its profile with the return of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters to the Real Club Valderrama in Sotogrande on 19th to 22nd October. This summer, Marbella’s Azahara Muñoz won the Spanish Ladies Open at Guadalmina, which also raised the profile of the coast’s excellent golf courses, and this upcoming tournament is certain to attract great crowds of golf fans.

Valderrama is one of the most famous courses in Europe and represents an epicentre for the sport. The historic setting is perfect for grand tournaments and Javier Riviriego, the Director General of the club, told the press: “We cannot hide the fact that we are delighted to host the tournament. Following the remodelling that we have carried out over the last few months we are looking forward to presenting a course in extraordinary condition to the European Circuit.”

They have been hard at work pruning back the trees to ensure that spectators have excellent views of play. Sr. Riviriego added that this would also contribute to a more competitive style of golf and that the players would have to take more risks. It sounds like his prediction of a “fun four days of golf” will be exactly what the audience gets.

Valderrama is committed to a long-term future for this tournament and Sr. Riviriego explains, it is all part of the aim to make Andalucía, “the great European golf destination.” The plan is to make this new tournament one of the most important on the golfing calendar. He said: “We are going to experience a few really beautiful days, which will be reminiscent of the golden years of golf in Sotogrande with the Volvo Masters.” The regional government is actively supporting the tournament in order to promote the Costa del Sol as an unparalleled destination in Europe for golfers.

Everyone is eager to know which of the world’s top golfers will be playing at Valderrama. So far we know that Sergio García, winner of the Masters, and John Rahm, ranked No. 5 in the world will be there alongside players such as Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Álvaro Quirós, plus other members of the ‘Spanish Armada’.

Ticket sales are going well and if you know an enthusiastic young golfer, tickets are free for those aged 16 and under.

Sotogrande is the home of five championship golf courses and the arrival of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters will raise the profile of this beautiful resort as an even more desirable residential location, particularly for golfers.
